Gabriella Cilmi “Sweet About Me” (2008)

I love this song. I was introduced to Gabriella Cilmi hours ago thanks to her performance on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and now I’m in love.

The 17-year-old (!!!) singer was born in Australia to Italian parents and now lives in the UK.

Sweet About Me” was the first single from Lessons to Be Learned, which was first released in Australia in March 2008, but just hit the States last week.

The song features bluesy drums, jazzy upright bass, and a folky guitar riff, that culminates with faint church organs.

Cilmi’s voice is raspy and authoritative, and is reminiscent of Amy Winehouse pre-downward spiral… she sounds much older than she is.

Interesting stuff. I was actually most intrigued by her live cover of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love.
